Introduction
The concept of operations management discussed in this operations management assignment encompasses designing and controlling the procedures of production. Business operations involved in the production of goods and services are optimized through operations management. Planning, supervising and organizing the various aspects of production are the salient objectives of operations management. It is concerned with ascertaining that the operations are efficient in utilizing as less resources as possible and meeting the demands of the end customer. Operations management focuses on converting inputs such as energy, labour and raw materials into outputs which are capable of fulfilling the needs of consumers (Windarto, Dewi and Hartama 2017, p. 11). Abu Dhabi National Oil Company known as ADNOC specializes in producing energy. Operations are based on tapping the hydrocarbon value chain producing, storing, refining and distributing a range of petrochemical products. The operations management assignment critically evaluates the techniques being used by the company to harness and distribute energy products. With the change in the landscape of global energy the company needs to relentlessly improve its operational procedures from the grass root level.

Overview of the company

Demands for crude oil rose exponentially after 1971 inducing Sheikh Sultan to establish the ADNOC Company. ADNOC since then has managed, preserved and produced reserves of hydrocarbon on behalf of the Abu Dhabi government. As on date the company manages and produces 3 million barrels of oil each day (Adnoc.ae 2020). It has also expanded its product portfolio by including sophisticate refining as well as petrochemicals among its core business process. The company explored in the operations management assignment is currently committed to exploring and implementing its operations so that it can continue to contribute to the UAE economy. The company is hence divided into 16 subsidiary companies concerned with upstream, midstream and downstream stages of production.

LO1: Critical Evaluation of Operations Management in the competitiveness of the organisation

Challenges faced by the company
ADNOC is facing some challenges in its operations and management (Adgeco.com 2020). The company explored in this operations management assignment is trying to reposition themselves so that it can challenge the international oil companies. It is seen in this operations management assignment that the company is overseeing their partial privatization policy and they bring strategic partners for the export markets and the international operations. This shows that it is quite challenging to handle international operations and exports. There are also some issues in the integrated strategy of 2030 mainly for the COVID-pandemic. The company is planning to restructure its strategy but then all business strategies need to be considered. However, all this will be creating a lot of confusion among employees in the workplace.

A critical discussion of theories, concepts and principles of Operations Management
The challenges of ADNOC identified in the operations management assignment can be solved by the theory of Six Sigma of operations management. This helps in improving the quality of operations and errors and defects are reduced. The overall cost of the company in operations is reduced along with the time. There are five steps in Six Sigma Theory which needs to be followed by ADNOC so challenges can be solved. Firstly the requirements of the customers internationally should be defined. Then the measurement should be done to find out the changes that should be done for meeting the goals. The root cause of the issue should be identified and analysed properly in the context of operations management assignment and then some improvements should be done. There should be a control process so that all the goals of ADNOC can be achieved. The employees should be trained in a top to down approach and support infrastructure should be created for success. The operations management assignment examines the words of Hammer 2019, p.175 that long term goals should not be planned at the starting. The company needs to emphasis on short term goals so that the international market can be developed by ADNOC. The focus should just lie on the improvement of processes.

six-sigma-in-oprational-management

Lean manufacturing is another concept of operational management which is used by many companies in today’s world. The methodology of lean manufacturing is having a focus on reducing waste and improving productivity (Bai, Satir and Sarkis 2019, p.1037). The lead times are reduced along with the cost of operations. This concept illustrated in the operations management assignment helps in improving the quality of products. ADNOC should try to implement this concept so that they can handle international expansion in terms of manufacturing new products and geographic expansion. The managers of the organization will have to think ways through which human activities can be organized so that maximum benefits can be provided to the society. Firstly ADNOC will have to understand the perspective of the customers. Herein operations management assignment, the next step will be to map the value stream and the third one will create flow by identifying all the barriers. A pull system will be established as the fourth step which is the start of some new work. The last one will be to keep a focus on continuous improvements. All these operational management theories and concepts discussed in the operations management assignment will contribute to the strategy of 2030 of ADNOC.

The values of the company are guiding the employees in the decision making process. There is a high level of consistency in the behaviour and actions of the employees. This is representing the collective commitment to achieving the set targets of the company. The productivity; workflow and quality are having a positive set of impact on the competitors in the market. All the employees are respectful, responsible, efficient, collaborative and progressive. ADGAS is the main competitor of ADNOC in UAE and the innovative spirit of ADNOC is allowing them to handle their operations. The company is improving its collaboration with their peers and partners for their collective strengths for delivering beneficial results.

Integration of business strategies with core operational processes and strategies
The business strategy is to grow the position of ADNOC in the market. This leading position will help the company to selectively expand its geographic reach and offering of the product. The company wants to introduce a new set of services which will be enhancing the satisfaction of the customers and their loyalty. ADNOC is rationalizing their capital expenditures and operations so that profitability can be increased (Fernandes, Radhakrishan and Al Farisi 2018, p.195). Strength is being created by the company in terms of its brand name. They are expanding their infrastructure of fuel distribution. A long-term relationship is being maintained with the government customers, industrial and commercial ones too. This is giving revenue growth in the corporate division. All these business strategies of ADNOC defined in the operations management assignment are linked with their operational strategies.
ADNOC is having an integrated operational strategy of 2030. They are looking after the aspects of energy landscape changes and they continue to be the essential cornerstone in the socio-economic growth of UAE. The future success is dependent on the strategy of 2030 which is going to transform their business. It is mapping out the smart growth, increase in profitability and creation of value. The three main imperatives are to have an upstream in profits, downstream in values and the increase in the economic and sustainable supply of gas. This strategy discussed within this operations management assignment is in link with the business strategy and hence in the year 2017, ADNOC had announced the expansion of partnership model and this active approach will help in mapping of the business so that further it contributes to the strategy of 2030 (Hvidt 2018, p.312). The new set of approaches will be unlocking the revenue growth and access to the products for growth in the market. The strategy of ADNOC discussed in the operations management assignment is being evolved from the ambition and the vision which has always remained the same. In this way, there will be benefits provided to the customers and the nation.

LO2: Evaluation of quality management process and supply chain network in accomplishing strategies of the company

2.1 Critical Evaluation of principles, techniques and practices of managing quality in operation
Quality is one of the most essential factors which usually cannot be ignored by the organizations (Slack and Brandon-Jones 2018). There are many tools available for the process of quality management. However, there is a quality management system which acts as a roadmap for a better quality of the products and services. Without this roadmap, most of the companies find difficultly with the directions. In the process of operations, there are many quality management principles which will be solving the challenges of ADNOC that were stated above. The description of each principle is given below within this operations management assignment.

Leadership
ADNOC is planning to reposition so that the international market and the exports can be handled properly. However, for this, there is a requirement of quality idea and it must start from the top. If the leadership is not good that the organization will be suffering. The vision and goal of the organization should be set in the minds of the leaders. Further, they need to inspire the employees to work hard for handling the challenges in an efficient manner. The morale should be high and the turnover of the employees in case of challenges should be low. Some of the key benefits of this principle outlined in the operations management assignment are increased in the effectiveness of meeting the challenges of ADNOC (Oilandgasmiddleeast.com 2020). The processes in the organization will be better coordinated and the communication level will increase rapidly. This will allow ADNOC to deliver the desired set of results to the customers.

Engagement of People
As stated in the operations management assignment, all the challenges can be managed by ADNOC when the workforce is having proper engagement. The abilities of staffs should be valued and used (Barbosa,Gambi and Gerolamo 2017, p.440). This will be contributing to continuous improvement, discussion on the issues and learning’s. The staffs will be held accountable for their actions by this principle. This will be increasing the activeness of the employees to work for achieving the goals of ADNOC. It will be enhancing the personal development, creativity and initiatives of the employees. Collaboration and trust will be formed in the organization. There will be increasing attention to the shared culture and values in ADNOC. For this, the company will have to communicate better and also conduct some surveys to understand the needs of the employees.

Improvement
If the organizations like ADNOC want a strong quality system then some changes are needed. In this case, the principle of improvement will be applicable. It will be solving the international market issues of the company and competition will be managed properly. On an ongoing basis, there should be an improvement in the capabilities and performance of the company (Prajogo 2016, p.242). All the activities must be having a direct link with the goals and through encouragement, improvements will be possible. It should be noted in the operations management assignment that quality is not about data analysis or some audits. It mainly needs praise and recognition.

2.2 Critical role of the organization’s supply chain in aligning operational strategy to business strategy
The supply chain network of ADNOC is creating a link between operational and business strategies. The logistics and services of ADNOC are known for their world-class shipping and onshore and offshore logistics and services. The company is 100% as the self-owners and they are serving the international customers along with the ADNOC group. The international shipping is excellent of the company and there is expertise in diversified services. This is helping in the delivery of hydrocarbon products from Abu Dhabi to international locations. It is evident in operations management assignment that the development of the energy industry of the UAE is dependent on the logistics and services of the company (Tahawultech.com 2020). This is making the nation known to be as global providers of energy and they are contributing to the overall growth in the economy. ADNOC is turning towards the process of blockchains for streamlining the process of supply chains. The company examined in the segments of operations management assignment has announced its successful collaboration with IBM. In this way, the company will be making use of blockchains which are based on systems that are automated. This will be integrating the production of gas and oil across the complete value chain.

This is a ground-breaking system which is giving a secure platform for validation, tracking and executions of transactions at each stage. It is starting from the production and ending to the customers. This blockchain technology noted in the operations management assignment is reducing a large amount of time and improving the efficiencies of the operations. This, in turn, is supporting the reliability of data in production and transactions are having proper transparency. ADNOC is sharing their vision and the early set of successes in the blockchain embedment along with other advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (Tahawultech.com 2020). This is fulfilling the strategies of business like profitability and efficiencies. It is also unlocking the new values form the resources of gas and seizing the market opportunities. The company is demonstrating its innovative partnerships so that the power of technologies can be showed and creative thinking is evolved. According to the company selected in this operations management assignment, the game-changer was the process of blockchain. In this way, ADNOC is taking a massive leap in case of asset provenance and financials. They are now having the ability to track oil molecules. This is adding to the unique dimensions to the data visualization for the strategy of 2030 of ADNOC.

2.3 Development of Performance Indicators which can monitor, control and improve operations
ADNOC needs to apply Authorization for Expenditure to control the expenses of the operations. The AFE should be used to continuously monitor the budget of the project and monitor the completion of the milestones.

Lease Operating Expenses metrics should be used by ADNOC to control the crude oil and gas operations. The Lease Operating Expenses indicate the costs incurred by an operator to sustain the state of the oil well even after drilling is over. It will aid in tacking costs and reducing them. LOE will also provide insights on the current and future financial health of the company (SoleimaniRoozbahani, ShojaeiBarjouei and Hojjati 2018, p. 3688). Additionally ADNOC should also use Delivery and Shipment times to ensure overall customer satisfaction. The current logistics system of the company defined in the operations management assignment is competent with a fleet of trucks and tankers. However, such KPI’s will lend crucial insights which can lead to better scheduling and faster delivery of consignments to customers. The “Cash to Cash” cycle time in supply chain should be examined for better management of funds (Wang and Saputra 2018, p.296).

LO3: Evaluation of Information Management System in Operations Management

3.1 Critical discussion of synthesizing different information systems and assisting operations management
It can be veritably seen in the operations management assignment that ADNOC is concerned with a wide range of diverse operations including processing 8 billion cubic feet of gas per day, refining and producing LNG to be supplied to the international market. A flexible information system is required by the company to gain insights in the operations and facilitate the flow of information between different departments. ADNOC is currently using the EnMS or “Energy Management System Software” for consolidating, analysing, monitoring and reporting energy (Hosseini and Paul 2017, p. 21). The deployed software has been critical in managing the core operations daily and accomplishing the weekly targets. ADNOC is divided into manageable segments by the software comprising companies, plants, SEUs, sectors and corporate. The EnMS ensures that each segment is able to get access to critical data about reserves of energy in real time. Crucial business decisions are enabled by it. Apart from this the EnMS software has been able to pinpoint the redundancies in the operations thus leading to savings of huge volumes of energy.
There has been 6% improvement in the baseline energy performance which implies an enhanced production of 57 million cubic feet of natural gas. Hence ADNOC has been able to save 150 million USD in terms of cumulative costs incurred and 8.1 million reductions in the emission of carbon dioxide (Skjæveland et al. 2016, p.32). Information has enhanced the transparency of data required for faster operative procedures. Following data and benefits are inferred from the energy management software provided within this operations management assignment:

3.2 Evaluation of the different ICT applications in empowering the Operations Management
ADNOC has installed a plethora of ICT applications in its operations which has enhanced the outcomes of its diverse operations. The EnMS software used in the context of operations management assignment has been able to define the various ways in which the company should operate to save energy and reach production targets without using any added resources. Further the ERP system has tendered access to real time data and sales trends reports. The company armed with the information has been able to reallocate its resources efficiently and replenish its inventory responding to the trends and patterns identified by the information system.

Refinery Information System
ADNOC has additionally also deployed “Refinery Information System” under the ERP which has empowered the Operations Management System through the following process (Al-Darwish and Choe 2019, p.731). The following advantages have been derived by ADNOC as elaborated below within this operations management assignment:

  • Management of Oil Movement
  • Real-time Optimization of Resources
  • Pricing as per the trends of the market
  • Energy Balancing
  • Production Accounting
  • Tracking and monitoring the progress of each operations via KPIs

Communication Systems
Using state of the art digitizing techniques ADNOC has been able to assimilate vital data about its daily operations aiding long term plans and schedules. The operations of ADNOC are spread over 16 subsidiary companies which are involved with different stages (da Conceição, Broberg and Paravizo 2017, p.54). Adequate communication is required between the units to facilitate smooth running of the operations. ICT applications used by ADNOC including dashboards, forums and chats has ensured that crucial information with respect to oil and gas production are conveyed within minutes. Energy demand growing globally requires enhanced production of refined oil and gas in a limited timeframe. Constant collaboration and discussion via ICT methods has empowered decision making required in increasing the daily output of operational units.

Block Chain Supply Systems
The study developed in the operations management assignment signifies that ADNOC has acted as a pioneer in the field of oil and gas production by partnering with IBM and installing block chain supply system. The system has provided a consolidated platform for tracking, validating and executing transactions starting from the production well and ending in the target customer. The system has effectively reduced the time taken for executing transaction among the different subsidiary companies of ADNOC. Operational efficiency across the value chain has considerably increased due the reliable production data enhancing the transparency of the different transactions. Operational costs have been reduced by the utilization of block chain technology by cutting down time-consuming and labour-intensive procedures of the company (Laradi et al. 2017, p.76). Enhanced asset management has been accomplished since the platform tracks the volumes and financial values of each bilateral transaction between the subsidiary companies automating the process of accounting.

3.3 Critical discussion of the methods, applications and emerging technologies which will optimize the operational process

Artificial Intelligence Applications
Oil and gas has been hugely benefitted by the ICT technologies in its multiple operations. However, the readings used to prepare this operations management assignment, ADNOC have not used AI extensively in its offshore operations which can empower the operative processes on a large scale. ADNOC cab make use of “Sandy” a geosciences based AI which has been successfully used by prestigious oil and refining companies. A cloud based geosciences platform it will allow ADNOC to interpret geophysics, geology, reservoir and historic project information (Habib et al. 2017, p. 32). Such instant access to critical data can hugely benefit the external operations of the company in extracting oil from wells.AI further enables to learn and interpret data with very less human interactions. ADNOC can use AI to examine complex internal operations and respond to them effectively. Machine learning is useful in the cases of running simulations and suggesting data models. This point mentioned in the operations management assignment can also be applied by ADNOC to test potential impacts of new energy products and calculate the environmental risks associated with it before synthesizing operational plans.

Drone Technology
ADNOC should also make use of drones for surveillance and remote monitoring. With the deployment of drones in its strategic business units and oil fields there will be better management of the equipment, infrastructure, trucks and tankers. A 360 degree perspective provided by drones will aid in monitoring essential field operations (Lu et al. 2018, p.33). Unmanned production units and platforms can be operated with very less manual effort. Further drones can be provided with ultrasonic sensors to execute non-destructive close range inspection on oil and gas to detect any flaws. Pipelines and storage tanks current health can be assessed by ADNOC through the application of drones in the operative processes.

LO4: Design a specific project plan for a business scenario and implementation

4.1 Principles, practices and methodologies in developing, controlling and evaluating the project
In order to develop, manage and control a project in ADNOC the following steps will be executed. The current project explored in the operations management assignment focuses on analysing the business operations and developing methods which can reduce energy and time.

Project Scope
This is the initial step which will define in the scope of the project. In this specific case the scope of the project is to examine the different processes of ADNOC which can be improved through saving energy and time. The deliverables discussed in the operations management assignment are as follows:

  • Reduction of Energy Costs
  • Reduction of Production Costs
  • Reduction of dependence on foreign energy sources
  • Identifying and eliminating repetitive tasks

Developing a schedule
This phase discussed in the operations management assignment entails defining the timelines and operations associated with the project. It can be seen that the operational activities of ADNOC consists of onshore production, offshore production, drilling services, sour gas production and production of petroleum. Each of these operations will be analyzed for 4 days each to understand the nuances and recording critical data. The volume of output produced by each unit and the inputs required (raw material, human resources and energy) for them will be calculated. In a similar manner the processing functions of ADNOC will be studied to understand the operative procedures and the energy being used for each of them. Following the documentation of critical operative information the standards and procedures being used by ADNOC will be compared against the practices and standards being used by its rivals to harness energy (Ali, Paris and Gunasekaran 2019, p. 31). Herein operations management assignment, measures will be suggested based on the comparison and measuring the impacts of the various tools being used in the operative processes.

Developing a team
A team will be developed to divide and delegate the various activities of data collection and analysis associated with the project. The current project involves the collaborating with the different plant and operational supervisors. It also entails collecting and analysing data with respect to energy and resources being used in each level of operations. All the tasks will be equitably distributed among the team.

Project Control
A cybernetic form of control will be used to manage the progress of the project. The outcomes of the project are as followed.

Activity

Assimilating cost and volume of energy being used for each operation of ADNOC Calculating the time consumed in each operations

Within 15 days

Analyzing the tasks which are repetitive in nature and can be performed by automated tools Analyzing the operative procedures using redundant energy which can be minimized

Within 7 days

Comparing with practices of other oil and gas companies

Within 2 days

Presenting the findings

1 day

A cybernetic control will be used to examine the outputs, milestones and timeline of the project. If the milestones do not meet the set standards pattern of the activities will be altered.

Project Evaluation
The current project is of shorter economic span in which the inputs will not affect the financial or market position of the company. Thus in this case static method of evaluation will be used to assess the project. The costs, benefits and risks associated with analysing the current operations will be presented to the investors (Sousa et al. 2019, p.995). The different ways in which energy, time and manual labour can be saved will be emphasized within this operations management assignment. “Net Present Value” and “Modified Rate of Return” of the project will be estimated to evaluate it.

4.2: Contribution of leadership in project during change and managing stakeholders
Managing stakeholders during change is an important aspect of leadership. In this Project it is the onus of the leader to present the overall vision of the project. A leader should display appropriate charisma to influence stakeholders of ADNOC in investing and participating in the project management process. A leader will be responsible for guiding operational stakeholders during any transitions or challenging phases of the project (Zhu, Balakrishnan and da Silveira 2019, p.10). Due to unanticipated events the project can face obstacles during the phase of execution. The leader needs to convince stakeholders to renew the process and stay invested highlighting the long term benefits derived on the completion of project. Steering the project in right direction and sustaining its momentum is the responsibility of the leader.

4.3 Implementation and Management of a project through tools and controls
The Project on operations management assignment will be executed via a set of tools and techniques to maintain control. A Logic Network will be used to synthesize a logical workflow of the project. Preceding and succeeding activities including observation, analysis and interpretation will adhere to the Logic Network (Al-Hemoud et al. 2019, p.76). A Gantt chart will be used following this to develop a feasible schedule for the project. Thereafter a Work Breakdown Structure will be used to determine the key deliverables of the projects (Kelleher 2019, p. 56). The operations will be broken down in manageable work processes and delegated among the team equitably adhering to the schedule of the Gantt chart.

Conclusion
The above report on operations management assignment clearly indicates that ADNOC is using state of the art operational procedures which are contributing to the overall profitability. The company explored in the operations management assignment needs to further reduce the dependency on energies and control emissions to emerge as a leader. ADNOC should also integrate latest technologies in its supply chain to understand the monitor and control its diverse operations. Human capital of the company should be deployed in strategic tasks for gaining better results and productivity in its operations.
