Health Care Assignment On Treatment Of Adults Constipation

Question

Task:
You are required to prepare a health care assignment exploring the treatment to reduce the constipation in adults.

Answer

Introduction
At times when the bowel movements become less frequent than the usual times then constipation occurs. The problem highlighted herein health care assignment is followed by a painful or incomplete passage of stool. Adults, especially older patients face constipation commonly. The problem occurs when the patient does not drink enough water, lacks in doing exercise, consumes a low fiber diet, and constantly avoid the urge to go. Even psychological disorders like stress and depression can cause constipation (Vriesman et al., 2020). The primary aim of the discussion is to assess the treatment that can help to reduce the symptoms of constipation in adults. In order to do that, A’s of evidence has been used.

Acquire
Adult patients have high chances of having constipation. They need proper treatment to make their bowel movement better. It has been observed that person taking at least 20g of dietary fiber in the patient’s diet chart per day recover faster as compared to the patient who drink or take in fluid 2000 to 3000 mL/day. Besides, many adult patients might have cardiovascular limitations, in that case, it is necessary to limit the intake of fluid. Hence in order to evaluate the evidence based treatment, PICO question is formulated in Table 1.

With the help of search strategy in table 2 including keywords, Boolean operators and truncations, appropriate articles has been extracted from PUBMED, CINAHL and google scholar which has helped to answer the Formulated PICO question.

Managing constipation in adults or managing chronic constipation in adults and preventing adults from constipation and in-take of fluid for improving constipation.

The inclusion criteria in the discussion includes the following aspects-

  • Peer-reviewed journals and articles that have been published from 2017 to 2021 are included.
  • Peer-reviewed journals and articles that have been published in the English Language have been included.
  • Peer-reviewed journals and articles that have research topic focused on take in of dietary fiber have been included.
  • Journals where full text can be extracted is only included.

With the help of search strategy 89 papers were extracted which further included and excluded with the help of exclusion criteria mentioned above. After excluding multiple journals and articles, the following five studies were considered eligible for inclusion listed in table 3.

Finding

Study 1

(Shen et al., 2019)

Cross-sectional population-based study

Lower dietary fiber in an adult increases the risk of constipation.

Study 2

(Krogh, Chiarioni & Whitehead, 2017)

Descriptive Study

Change in dietary fiber helps in the treatment of patients suffering from constipation.

Study 3

(Okuda et al., 2019)

Cross-sectional Study

Modification in dietary habits tends to pose a positive result in the case of functional constipation.

Study 4

(Black & Ford, 2018)

Descriptive Study

Dietary manipulation helps to improve the bowel movement in adults.

Study 5

(Zhang et al., 2018)

Experimental Study

Soluble dietary fiber have a long term positive impact in removing the constipation symptoms.

Appraise
Carefully and systematically examining research to evaluate its authenticity, value, and need for the required context is a process known as critical appraisal. Critically appraising an article is important to have an evidence base research. Evidence-Based Practice is considered to be crucial because it focuses on improving the consequences and provides ample care. Through this, the patients are provided with the best effective care relative to the best evidence that is available.

NHMRC is the prime framework that helps in rating the piece of paper based on five different criteria which are as evidence base, consistency of the result of the study, clinical impact posed by the recommendation of the researcher, generalizability and applicability. It classifies the journals or research based on their study design, its effectiveness, reliability and validity.

In the discussion, five studies has been included:
Study 1: Cross-sectional population-based study: Level of evidence III-2

Study 2: Descriptive Study: Level of evidence III-2

Study 3: Cross-sectional study: Level of evidence III-2

Study 4: Descriptive Study: Level of evidence III-2

Study 5: Experimental design: Level of evidence III-2

As the above included studies have level III-2 of evidence, it means the data of the study is reliable and valid and can be used for clinical practice. It will help in understanding the need and requirement of including fiber in the diet and its advantages in movement of the bowel and relief from the suffering of constipation. It will also helped in making the correct decision for the needed patient as adding fiber in the diet every day will make defecation easier (BE, 2019).

Conclusion
To conclude the discussion, it can be stated that the discussion has provided an overview of the intervention that can be opted to treat adult patients dealing with constipation. The findings of the discussion resulted in the intervention of curing the adult patients who are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. The adult patients who are predominant with constipation must take in fiber daily in the course of meal to get cured. There are various methods for treating constipation but relevant studies it has proved that including fiber in a regular diet is efficient.
