Data Modelling Assignment: Introduction Of Computerised Library Management System By Globe Library

Question

Task: Write a reflective journal on computer architecture assignment analysing the theoretical concepts captured from the weekly material.

Answer

Introduction
Various technologies are being introduced in the present times in the organisations for improving their functions. It has been observed through the research on data modelling assignment that the improved automated systems permit the organisation with accommodating the increased needs and requirements of the customers. Globe Library is the community library that is providing the members with access to huge amount of books. Managing the details of customers and the books maintained in the organisation is becoming rather difficult and it does not allow the organisation to efficiently handle all the customer needs. In present times, it has been observed that the vast assortment of the books as well as number of the registered users have risen extensively and it is causing various issues in manual handling of the major functions of the organisation. For improving the services, senior management of library has determined the introduction of the computerised LMS or Library Management System.

Entity Relationship diagram

Entity Relationship diagram in data modelling assignment

In this Entity Relationship Diagram, it could be observed that the main entities of the database are determined to be the books, members, payment and the book issue. The members would be required to be registered in the system and ensure that proper data is being maintained in the system. The books would be stored according to the details of the book (Edalatian, Sanatjoo&Nowkarzi, 2018). The books would be added instantly when the books would be procured from the suppliers. The employees would be responsible for saving all the information about the books in the system and ensure updated data is being maintained (Abdullah et al., 2021). The payment data would be stored in the separate database from where the authorised individuals would be allowed to access and analyse the various payments. The alerts would be generated regarding the late situation of any book issue and then based on that, the penalty of the issue would be calculated (Wang, 2021). The book issue would include the date when the book has been issued, the time when the book has been issued, the type of book issue as well as the initial price of the book issue. The calculation of the price would be done by the system automatically and ensure that the proper data regarding the charges are being maintained (Rusyn et al., 2018). The details of the members that would be stored are name, address, phone, email, username and the member unique identification number. The details of the book that would be stored are the book ISBN, the book author, the book title, the type and the genre of book. The payment database would include the details of payment such as the PaymentID, payment date, and the payment amount. The book issue would include the memberID to whom the book has been issued, the book ID that has been issued, the date of book issue, the type of book issue, the time of book issue as well as the price of book issue (Dohe, 2019).

Relational model

Sample screen

It could be observed from this image that the sample screen of searching book has been provided. The members would be allowed to search for various books that are available in the library. It would help the members to search any desired book rather easily than it is being done manually in present time (Rusyn et al., 2019). The book could be searched by entering the book name, the book author, the subject category as well as the publication date. All the details are required to be provided properly in the system for ensuring that the proper data is being returned by the system at proper time (Moran &Morner, 2017). The system would check the information provided in the sample screen against all the data that is being stored in the database and display the accurate results for the members (Rusyn,Vysotska&Pohreliuk, 2018).

Effectiveness of database design

The database that has been developed for Global Library would include the capability of storing all the needed information for the system. The payment data would be stored in the separate database from where the authorised individuals would be allowed to access and analyse the various payments. The alerts would be generated regarding the late situation of any book issue and then based on that, the penalty of the issue would be calculated. The book issue would include the date when the book has been issued, the time when the book has been issued, the type of book issue as well as the initial price of the book issue. The calculation of the price would be done by the system automatically and ensure that the proper data regarding the charges are being maintained. The details of the members that would be stored are name, address, phone, email, username and the member unique identification number. The details of the book that would be stored are the book ISBN, the book author, the book title, the type and the genre of book. The payment database would include the details of payment such as the PaymentID, payment date, and the payment amount. The book issue would include the memberID to whom the book has been issued, the book ID that has been issued, the date of book issue, the type of book issue, the time of book issue as well as the price of book issue.

Changes in ER model and relational model
There were no changes made to the relational model and the ER model after creating the sample screen because all the needed features in the sample screen has been added in the database. The data that would be retrieved through the sample screen would be retrieved accurately from the database.

Conclusion
Therefore, the conclusion could be determined from the above discussion that the new Library Management system being implemented at Global Library would be efficient for the organisation and it would help in ensuring proper data management. The database that has been developed for Global Library would include the capability of storing all the needed information for the system.
