Networking assignment: A Journal Article Review

Question

Task: The purpose of this networking assignment is to help you understand how research is conducted and reported in Information Technology related fields. You are asked to read a peer-reviewed article from a scholarly journal in the field of Advance Networking and Communication Systems.

Answer

Task - 1 Locating the journal
Location of the journal - [1]L. Chen, Q. Hu and Q. Zou, "An Advanced Networking Protocol for VHF Data Exchange System", Journal of Internet Networking, vol. 20, no. 2, pp. 599-606, 2019. Available: https://jit.ndhu.edu.tw/article/viewFile/2032/2039. [Accessed 31 August 2020].

Task - 2 Summary and discussion
The journal explored in the networking assignment is mainly focused on the development of the CSTDMA protocol for solving the problem of VDS in respect of high data transmission [1]. In the maritime field, the AIS serves a considerable high performance. AIS has multiple functions. It enables the ships to connect automatically with each other. Moreover, it ensures the safety and security of the ship navigation system. It also deals with maritime traffic system proficiency. But the system provides lots of clichés as the demand for maritime communication accelerates and there is a need to upgrade the system. In this respect, the advanced technology VDS or VH data system is developed so that the problem of high transmission of data can be easily performed [1]. The E-nave committee of IALA has proposed this system as a solution to congestion in the network system of AIS due to high data transmission. This system is new and is under research. This research and development of the VDS system will help in the advancement of maritime networking systems in respect of technological aspects in the coming times. The research of this system is very important for maritime communication and so different scholars opt for it. After a whole lot of research, they found the CSTDMA protocol as a probable effective protocol that can be associated with VDS to provide an improved communication system that can fully serve the purpose it was created for. The journal has different segments, one of which focuses on the different theories related to protocol and slot schemes in the context of CSTDMA PROTOCOL [1]. The second segment illustrated the constant changing of the modeling aspects to achieve the probable development the scholar wanted. The third section discusses the experiments that are conducted to develop an efficient model of the system. The last section concentrates on the concluding brief of the journal.

The first section of networking assignment starts by discussing the major technologies related to schemes of slot and CSTDMA. This portion also focused on the development process of the CSTDMA protocol along with analysing the rate and slot related to the protocol. [1] The second portion provides a wide range of information on a specific model of CSTDMA that is the Simulation model of the protocol. The third portion laid down those experiments that are carried out on this respective model and the last part states that the CSTDMA protocol with all its testing and experiments.

Task – 3what are the methods used for data collection discussed in the networking assignment?
The data related to the article gather and analysed by specific methods which are as follows
The first aspect of research is to collect the information or data related to it. This is called data collection. In general, there are two methods of collection - primary and secondary. The primary method deals with original data gathered on the field[2]. In respect of this journal the method adopted as a secondary method. The journal provides a wide range of information about the researches that are carried on developing the CSTDMA protocol to develop the AIS system of network communication in maritime navigation systems [1]. This data includes the schemes and theories scholars have adapted to develop this model, the experiments carried out to achieve the purpose and ultimately develop an efficient communication system. This data provides a clear understanding of the topics under research as well as comparative aspects of the data gathered. In respect of the argument, The requirement of developing the existing marine communication system is discussed with more accuracy by providing raw data related to the problem.

According to[3]VDS has not only provided for communication set up between ships but also with shores by providing a platform of satellite that will enable the ship in communicating with any global land or shores. This finding is not available in the journal chosen. This developed aspect of VDS is significant in analysing its importance in incorporating in the AIS system.
After data collection, the data needs to be analysed for justifying it to the topic requirements. In the respect of this topic, the methods taken are qualitative and quantitative. According to the [1] the traditional model of CSTDMA has a higher slot collision rate than the modern model. This protocol alone can provide efficiency in association with the AIS system in marine communication systems. Though [5] opines that as an alternative method RATDMA protocol is also used which acts like the CSTDMA but not controlled by the AIS station so that the ATON scanner must search for available space in which the data must be transmitted.

Task - 4 Conclusion
This article is mainly focused on a specific journal review of the topic ‘An Advanced Networking Protocol for VHF Data Exchange System’. The first portion of the article gives a detailed discussion of the development of the AIS system that plays a crucial role in the marine communication system. Due to problems related to large data transmission the system needs to be upgraded. The journal focuses on the CSTDMA slot model whose experiment and efficiency are discussed and analysed throughout the journal. The journal has been very limited in its findings of solution whereas in its argument it is seen that other protocols are also available that have an equal functional prospect as CSTDMA protocol. The journal lacked the data related to the functional merits and drawbacks of the model and which needs to be known during the experiment. The journal also has not provided any comparative analysis of any alternative set up in case of the protocol malfunction. The article if it relies on the primary data will have the practical observation of specific problems that are arising in the AIS system [6]. Data scanning in case of large data transmission is needed which is not specified in this journal. In this case of networking assignment, the CSTDMA needs to have more specific analysis. Thus, the lack of primary resources has provided inefficient information relating to the specification of the problem. The journal also has not provided practical examples that prove the model to be working efficiently and are serving the purpose intended to. The concept of AIS and its functions bears significance in this type of journal. The journal has limited information about the concept and the role and significance of this concept in the maritime communication system. Until and unless there was a clear understanding of the concept its need for development and up-gradation cannot be wholly understood. The journal needs to have brief but detailed information of this concept so that the purpose can well be understood.

The journal also lacks practical examples of the problem in the usage of the AIS system and also the review of the applicability of CSTDMA along with AIS to determine whether it has served the purpose or not. The journal concluded with an uncertain approach that provides incomplete information relating to the purpose fulfillment of the research. One of the major aspects of data is that the concluding part gives definite findings that the research aims to. But in this journal, the concluding part is not convincing and has gaps that will raise doubts. The concluding part has only ended with an approach to the possibility of satisfying the requirement. But it has not provided whether the model has been efficiently serving its purpose or not. Until and unless this doubt is cleared the purpose of research remains incomplete. The researcher was very confined in the context of gaining knowledge about the topic that is under research. It is evident in the way he chooses his methods and techniques. The researcher has shown less inclination towards alternative options to solve the issues that the journal is intended to. In the case of analysis, the quantitative aspect is well satisfied while the qualitative aspect is absent in most times. In considering the qualitative aspect the researcher needs to respond from his or her personal opinion or experience on the used data resources which many times may provide arguments and questions. The journal used to develop this networking assignment lacks the personal perception of the researcher in the analysis portion. Thus, there is no clear understanding of the reasons for which the researcher has applied the available resources. Though the journal has provided a clear and informative understanding of the CSTDMA protocoland its different aspects that enable it to be associated with the AIS system to serve the data transmission, yet it seems that the journal has certain gaps in respect of the information provided[1]. If the researcher used raw data along with the secondary resource it will widen the scope of the areas that are under research and also provide completeness in the data acquisition process. The researcher needs to be more speculative in the context of incorporating several dimensions rather than focusing on specific models or techniques that limit the scope of study and also raise doubts in matters of credibility[7]. And lastly, it seems that the research on networking assignment is conducted in a limited timeframe which is not sufficient. If the researcher had more time for study, the research can be more credible and definite in case of its objective fulfillment. ?
